Clay Tubes

Clay Tubes

For the clay tubes a very special clay is used. The tubes are formed in convenient sizes. You fill up with water, the water evaporates through the clay and supplies the roots with constant humidity. You can enjoy mounted orchids in your normal window sill without worrying about dry air and spraying regularly.

Since the clay pots are hand made, they might drip when first used. This will stip after a while. We recommend before mounting the orchids you keep the pots wet, and use moss spurs on the surface. Once the moss spurs germinate, the dripping stops for all. And this way you get a very natural look for your orchids.

In cooperation with the Botanical Garden Jena the Orchi-Pot was developed. Compared to conventional pots, the 'Form Follows Function' was used. The following advantages over normal pots are worth mentioning:

wall thickness
the tapered shape prevents the attached orchids from slipping
The rippled surface increases the contact surface with the plants
Attractive sizes at reasonable prices
stable openings for the hangers
not dripping

Barbosella cucullata on a claytube

1. Fill up with water.
2. Once the clay is wet, please use moss spurs (can be found in all kind of wet places outside)
3. If the moss is established you can start mounting your orchids.
4. Best for plants with fine roots like: Masdevallia, Pleurothallis, Lepanthes and many others.
Tip: The clay tubes look very attraktive if you add ornamental plants like mini ferns or others. Since these plants grow faster than your orchids, reduce them in size regularly. Please note: You should not use fertilizer inside the clay tube, the clay might get porose and break.
