Pumice is a porous volcanic rock of light weight. Due to the low density, dry pumice with its numerous pores can float on water. Pumice can be formed from all kinds of magma and therefore develops from basalt as well as from other rocks. Depending on the composition, pumice may appear white, light yellow, gray, brown or almost black. The chemical composition of the different types of pumice is, however, usually the same. Pumice stone is caused by explosive volcanic eruptions. The high gas content results in a pronounced bubble formation. The viscous sludge is foamed through these gas bubbles. On cooling, the spongy, porous, water and air-maintaining structure is retained. Pumice is a porous volcanic rock of light weight.
