Phalaenopsis presently is the best selling pot-plant in the world. In nearly any shop, super market, gas station, furniture store and plant shops Phalaenopsis can be seen. But the selection found there is only 1% of the varieties produced, fast growing and easy flowering selection, cloned through meristems.
There is a lot more to this genus, and most of the really desirable hybrids or species are hard to come by.

Etymology :

The name Phalaenopsis from the greek word DERIVES phalaena = moth, butterfly and is combined with opsis = looks like a butterfly orchid. That explains why these beautiful orchids are sometimes named 'moth orchids', or regarding their geographical origin, 'malayan orchid'.

Distribution :

They are native throughout southeast Asia from the Himalayan mountains to the islands of Polillo, Palawan and Zamboanga del Norte. Additionally, in the Iceland of Mindanao in the Philippines and northern Australia. Orchid Iceland of Taiwan is named after this genus (Formosa).

History:

The first time George Joseph CAMEL mentioned Phalaenopsis is in 1704. In John RAY’s 'Historia Plantarum Vol III’, Phalaenopsis amabilis was published as Visco-Aloes Luzonis decima quarta .

Until BLUME created the genus Phalaenopsis in 1825, it had many different names for example: Angraecum album maius, Cymbidium amabile and Epidendrum amabile . The type for his description was Phalaenopsis amabilis.
REICHENBACH made the first in-complete revision of the genus in 1862, followed by ROLFE with the second revision in 1910. In the 1960's Herman R. SWEET published the 3rd complete revision of Phalaenopsis. At the end of the 20th century, GRUSS & WOLF tried their luck in Europe whilst Eric A. CHRISTENSON published his ideas in the USA.
